What is Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)?

ODD is a type of childhood disruptive behavior disorder that mainly involves problems with the self-control of emotions and behaviors. At some stage, every child goes through a phase of challenging times. If your child or teenager has a persistent pattern of disruptive behavior, such as tantrums, arguing, and disrespect for authority, they may be caused by oppositional defiant disorder.

Signs of ODD

Persistent refusal to comply with instructions or rules
Defiance at home, school, and with friends
Negativity in dealing with everything
Disobedience with no fear of penalties
Hostility with authority figures, teachers, parents
Very noticeable temper tantrums even in the teen years
Argumentative
Refusal to follow rules
Academic issues
Spiteful and vindictive
Aggressive with friends
Low self-esteem

Causes of ODD

ODD can be hereditary
Environmental: due to prolonged anger from sadness, insecurity, and anxiety.
Lack of appropriate supervision and developmental delays in processing feelings
Extremely harsh discipline, abuse, or neglect.
An imbalance of serotonin or other brain chemicals
Lack of parental involvement in the child’s life or with parents in a violent relationship/s

Diagnosis of ODD

ODD should last for more than six months to be diagnosed. It is also persistent and disruptive at home and school.
The management of ODD includes medication and therapy.
